We ask every seller on PetTrader for photo ID and a live selfie, and verified accounts carry a badge — but the checks below still matter whenever you buy or rehome an animal in the UK.
For puppies and kittens, UK law (Lucy's Law) means they must be sold by the breeder, in the place they were bred, with the mother present. Never agree to a car-park or doorstep handover.
Ask for the microchip number, vaccination card, worming record and — where required — the council breeding licence number. Health-test certificates should name the parents.
Puppies and kittens must be at least 8 weeks old before they leave their mother. Adverts on PetTrader are blocked if the date of birth makes the animal younger than that.
Avoid bank transfers to strangers for a deposit on an animal you have not seen. Keep all messages in the PetTrader inbox so there is a record if something goes wrong.
Private sellers get their first advert free once their identity is verified, and licensed breeders and pet businesses can list under a subscription with a verified badge. Create your advert with clear photos, an honest description, the microchip number and your licence details where they apply, then reply to buyers directly in your PetTrader dashboard.

Every puppy advert on PetTrader comes from an identity-verified account, with the council licence number shown for licensed breeders and the microchip status recorded before publication. Puppies cannot be advertised for collection under eight weeks old, and you'll always see the mother listed so you can view her with the litter at the breeder's home.
Browse puppies for saleKitten adverts show breed, vaccination and worming status, whether the litter is registered with GCCF or TICA, and the age at which kittens are ready to leave. Private sellers and registered catteries go through the same identity checks, so you can compare pedigree and moggy litters near you and see who's behind the advert.
