    We identity-check our sellers

    • Photo ID + live selfie
    • Licence & paperwork
    • Human review + badges

Photo ID and live selfie check. We ask every seller for government photo ID and a live selfie. Our AI compares the two, then our team reviews the result.

Breeder licence and paperwork. Breeders add their council licence number, microchip details and health testing records. Adverts must meet Lucy's Law and the Animal Welfare Regulations 2018.

Human review and trust badges. Our team reviews each account by hand. Approved sellers earn badges such as Verified, Licensed Breeder, KC Registered and Insured on their adverts.

How to buy a pet safely in the UK

We ask every seller on PetTrader for photo ID and a live selfie, and verified accounts carry a badge — but the checks below still matter whenever you buy or rehome an animal in the UK.

See the animal with its mother

For puppies and kittens, UK law (Lucy's Law) means they must be sold by the breeder, in the place they were bred, with the mother present. Never agree to a car-park or doorstep handover.

Check the paperwork before you pay

Ask for the microchip number, vaccination card, worming record and — where required — the council breeding licence number. Health-test certificates should name the parents.

    Confirm the minimum age

Puppies and kittens must be at least 8 weeks old before they leave their mother. Adverts on PetTrader are blocked if the date of birth makes the animal younger than that.

Pay safely and keep a record

Avoid bank transfers to strangers for a deposit on an animal you have not seen. Keep all messages in the PetTrader inbox so there is a record if something goes wrong.

Selling or rehoming a pet on PetTrader

Private sellers get their first advert free once their identity is verified, and licensed breeders and pet businesses can list under a subscription with a verified badge. Create your advert with clear photos, an honest description, the microchip number and your licence details where they apply, then reply to buyers directly in your PetTrader dashboard.

Puppies, kittens and rabbits make up most searches on PetTrader. Here's what each advert must show before it goes live, so you know what to check before you travel.

    Puppies for sale

Every puppy advert on PetTrader comes from an identity-verified account, with the council licence number shown for licensed breeders and the microchip status recorded before publication. Puppies cannot be advertised for collection under eight weeks old, and you'll always see the mother listed so you can view her with the litter at the breeder's home.

    Browse puppies for sale

    Kittens for sale

Kitten adverts show breed, vaccination and worming status, whether the litter is registered with GCCF or TICA, and the age at which kittens are ready to leave. Private sellers and registered catteries go through the same identity checks, so you can compare pedigree and moggy litters near you and see who's behind the advert.

    Browse kittens for sale

    Rabbits for sale

Rabbit sellers list breed, sex, age and whether the rabbits are bonded pairs — important because rabbits should be kept in company. Adverts include vaccination details for RVHD and myxomatosis where available, and rescues go through the same identity checks as breeders when rehoming.

Buying and selling pets on PetTrader: FAQs

Common questions about buying, selling, adopting and rehoming pets in the UK.

How do I buy a pet on PetTrader?
Browse live adverts from breeders, rescues and private sellers across the UK. Message the seller securely through PetTrader to ask questions, see the animal with its mother and arrange a viewing before you pay anything.
Is it free to list a pet for sale?
Verified private sellers get their first advert free, then pay a one-off per-pet fee from £4.99. Breeders and businesses subscribe from £30/month, and the first 200 business accounts get their first 12 months free.
How do I adopt or rehome a pet?
Filter any search by 'Adoption' or 'Rehoming' to see pets looking for a new home. Rescues and shelters list on PetTrader, and rehoming adverts follow the same ID and welfare checks as sales.
What animals can I find on PetTrader?
Dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, birds, poultry, fish, reptiles, horses and other small pets. Use the category browser or search to narrow by breed, price, age and distance from your postcode.
    Is PetTrader safe?
We ask every seller to complete a photo ID and live selfie check, breeder licence and health paperwork are reviewed by our team, and all messaging stays in-app. Adverts from checked accounts carry a Verified badge. Never send money before seeing an animal in person at the seller's home.
