For buyers
- Always see the animal in person before paying anything, and see puppies and kittens with their mother.
- Never pay a deposit to someone you have not met, and never send money by bank transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency to a stranger.
- Ask for microchip, vaccination, worming and health-test paperwork, and check the microchip number matches the animal.
- Be wary of prices far below market value, sellers who refuse a video call, or anyone who wants to meet in a car park rather than at home.
- Check licensed breeders on their local council register — legitimate breeders will display a licence number.
- Keep conversations in PetTrader messages so we have a record if something goes wrong.
For sellers
- Screen buyers by phone or video call before inviting anyone to your home.
- Have someone with you for viewings, and don't advertise your exact address publicly.
- Take payment in a traceable way and give a written receipt.
- Never release an animal before payment clears, and never accept overpayment "refund" requests — this is a common scam.
Common scams
- Courier scam: a "seller" abroad asks for delivery, insurance or crate fees for a pet that does not exist.
- Overpayment scam: a buyer sends too much and asks you to refund the difference; the original payment is later reversed.
- Off-platform pressure: anyone rushing you onto WhatsApp or email to avoid our messaging is a warning sign.
Report a problem
If an advert or user concerns you, report it via our contact page with the listing link. We investigate every report and remove adverts that break our terms. If you suspect a crime, report it to Action Fraud; for animal welfare concerns contact the RSPCA (or SSPCA in Scotland).
