    Amphibians advice & buying guides

    Axolotls: water quality and temperature

Axolotls are aquatic for life and need cool water, ideally 16–18°C and never above 22°C, with a filtered, cycled tank and gentle flow. Test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate weekly. Use bare bottom or large smooth stones — fine gravel causes fatal impaction.

Frogs and toads: humidity and setup

Most species need a planted vivarium with a stable temperature, correct humidity and a shallow, dechlorinated water dish. Tree frogs need height, terrestrial species need floor space and a damp substrate. Low-level UVB and calcium supplements keep bones healthy.

    Always buy captive bred

Captive-bred amphibians travel better, carry fewer parasites and are legal to sell without collection concerns. Never take native frogs, toads or newts from the wild — great crested newts and their habitat are protected by law.

What to check before you buy

Ask the exact species and morph, whether it is captive bred, its age, what it is feeding on and how often, and the temperature it is kept at. Skin should be clean and unbroken, eyes clear and the animal alert. Have the tank cycled and running before collection, and find a vet who treats amphibians first.
