Question 1

How much do ferrets cost in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Ferret kits usually sell for £20–£100 in the UK. Standard polecat kits sit at the lower end, while albino, silver and DEW colours, or already-neutered and vaccinated adults, sell nearer £80–£100. Budget a further £150–£250 for a large cage, bedding, water bottle and litter tray.

Question 2

Where can I find ferrets for sale near me?

Accepted Answer

Browse the live ferret adverts on this page, then filter by county or set a distance radius from your postcode. New ferret listings are posted weekly by hobby breeders, working-ferret keepers and rescues across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Question 3

Should I buy a hob or a jill?

Accepted Answer

Hobs (males) are larger and often more laid-back; jills (females) are smaller and more active. An un-neutered jill must be brought out of season by mating, a jill jab or a hormone implant, otherwise she risks fatal aplastic anaemia — so most pet buyers choose a neutered jill or arrange the vet work early.

Question 4

What age can a ferret kit leave its mother?

Accepted Answer

Eight weeks and fully weaned onto solid food. Kits sold younger are much harder to litter train and far more likely to nip, so ask the seller for the exact date of birth.

Question 5

What should I ask before buying a ferret?

Accepted Answer

Ask the age, whether the ferret is neutered, descented or vaccinated against distemper, how it has been handled, and what it is fed. Always view the ferret at the seller's home, see it out of the cage, and never pay a deposit before visiting.

Question 6

Do ferrets make good pets?

Accepted Answer

Yes, for owners who can give them time. Ferrets live 6–10 years, sleep up to 18 hours a day and need a few hours out of the cage daily, a meat-based diet and a companion — they are highly social and usually happiest kept in pairs.

Question 7

Do ferrets smell?

Accepted Answer

They have a natural musky scent that never disappears completely, but it is greatly reduced by neutering, cleaning bedding two or three times a week and cleaning the litter tray daily. Bathing too often makes the smell worse, not better.

Question 8

Where can I buy ferret kits for sale in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Ferret kits are advertised on PetTrader by hobby breeders, working-ferret keepers and rescues, mostly between spring and late summer when litters are born. Filter the adverts by county or postcode radius, check the kit is at least 8 weeks old, and arrange to view the litter with the mother before agreeing anything.

Question 9

Is it legal to keep a ferret as a pet in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Ferrets are legal to keep and sell in the UK with no licence needed for pet ownership, though anyone breeding and selling animals commercially needs a local-authority licence. You must meet the Animal Welfare Act 2006 duty of care: suitable housing, diet, companionship and veterinary treatment.

Question 10

How do I avoid scams when buying a ferret online?

Accepted Answer

View the animal in person at the seller's own home before any money changes hands, keep all messages inside PetTrader so there is a record, and never pay by bank transfer, gift card or crypto to someone you have not met. Every PetTrader seller completes a photo-ID and live selfie check, and verified accounts carry a badge, and you can report an advert from the listing page.
